The Health Canada Physical Activity Guide is a handbook to help you make wise choices about physical activity. Choices that will improve your health, help prevent disease, and allow you to get the most out of life.
Health Canada and the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) worked in partnership to develop Canada's Physical Activity Guide to Healthy Active Living. Research indicated that Canadians were unaware that physical inactivity is a serious risk factor for premature death, chronic disease and disability, a magnitude of risk comparable to that of smoking. Two-thirds of Canadians are inactive, a serious threat to their health and a burden on the public health care system. Canadians were confused by all the data and information available about physical activity and fitness and wanted a valid and practical guide, similar to Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating, that would help them judge how much physical activity they needed to achieve better health.
