Urticaria Pigmentosa

Urticaria pigmentosa is a disease that is characterized by bumpy
skin lesions and intense itching. Rubbing of these leisions results in formation
of hives on the
site.

- Definitive cause is unknown
- Hereditary predisposition
- Accumulation of excessive numbers of a type of inflammatory cells called
mast cells in the skin.

- Brownish lesions on skin
- Formation of hives or blisters when lesions
are rubbed or scratched
- Flushing of face
- Diarrhea
- Rapid heart rate
- Headache and fainting spells

Itching can be uncomfortable and distressing. Appearance of bumps and spots
can make you self conscious. Bee stings can trigger urticaria pigmentosa. Urticaria
pigmentosa may progress to the more serious systemic mastocytosis.

- Antihistamines may relieve symptoms such as
itching and flushing.
- Cold compresses
- Calamine lotion helps soothe the leisions.
