The SAFE has four principal uses: to identify specific problems occurring during the oral and pharyngeal stages of swallowing, to develop recommendations regarding treatment plans, to make periodic reevaluations and assessments of progress in therapy and to serve as a research tool. Its results can also be used to determine the effects of various interventions on test performance.
